Friday, Friday, gonna get down on Friday. Sorry if I just got that stuck in your head, but this week flew by in a flash thanks to the long weekend and my trip to California. Just last Friday, I was soaking up the sun and reading my book at Caffe Strada in Berkeley (see photo below). I have been there every time I come through Berkeley and I can’t get over their outside deck space. I will have a post up in the next few weeks with my California adventures, but in the meantime, I have some reading material for you all! Also, share with me your weekend plans! I think the farmers’ market, plenty of walking outside, and maybe some Ethiopian food is in store for me.
Cleaning Wooden Boards from Martha Stewart: I keep a wood cutting board and clean it after using it, but I need to try the coarse salt/lemon cleaning method to keep it in good shape! I guess Martha still has it? #jailbird
The Questionable Link Between Saturated Fat and Heart Disease from Wall Street Journal: Saturated fat is vilified by research scientists and doctors- but the reminder is that butter, cheese, and red meat don’t need to be shunned! We are cutting back on fats and eating 25% more carbohydrate fillers than in the early 70s. Thanks to the Amy for the heads up to this article!
The Eight Nutrition Trends That Drive This Dietitian Crazy from HuffPost Living: Cleansing, juicing, and ‘health washing’ cookies if they’re organic are some extreme examples of nutrition fads that are pure entertainment. I do love how she ends this piece about talking about the positives of the changing culture of nutrition.
Who Made the Standing Desk? from the NYTimes: We think we are so advanced to focus on making life less sedentary, except that it was thought of in 1797. In fact, too much time on your feet may cause a different set of health problems, including varicose veins and musculoskeletal injuries.

If Local Farms Aren’t Local Enough, Buy From The Rooftop from NPR’s The Salt: This idea is incredible- Whole Foods in Brooklyn has a 20,000 square feet foot rooftop greenhouse to provide herbs, salads, and tomatoes year-round in a sustainable way. The Mini-Farmery, grocery stores where you can pick your own produce, are another great way to take farm to table to the next level.
Hummus Manufacturer Sabra Wants the FDA to Regulate Hummus from LA Times: A new petition led by Sabra wants hummus to be regulated, to reduce the dip’s non-chickpea competitors. They name ‘hummus products’ made from legumes other than chickpeas akin to the marketing of guacamole made with fruit other than avocados – while that may be stretch, it’s an interesting labeling question.
Red Cabbage Smoothie from According to Elle: I have been into smoothies lately, and am obsessed with this purple hued smoothie using frozen red cabbage, blueberries, banana, and yogurt. Definitely a great idea when I get bored of my current spinach smoothie kick. Elle is the Registered Dietitian for MyFitnessPal and has lots of great recipes and workouts on her blog!
Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Date Balls from Running with Spoons: Oats, dates, and almonds create the base for these delectable looking little bites – the perfect summer dessert when you don’t want to turn on the oven! I am going to need to make some of these to store in the freezer. I can always count on Amanda to give me healthy treat options.
What I Ate Wednesday: Calorie Counting by the Real Life RD: A great conversation on when calorie counting can be productive versus damaging. I have found, like Robyn, calorie counting helped me figure out how to pack my days with fruits and vegetables to better balance my calorie intake. She also talks about the dark side of calorie counting that can lead into damaging cycles of restriction.
You’re Allowed To Love Your Body by Snack Therapy: Not only is Carly an amazing person to follow for positive body image posts, she is real and hilarious and makes me feel the self confidence that she has worked so hard to achieve. It’s an infectious feeling and I urge you not to smile and hug yourself/her virtual self while reading this post from her!
