This Sweet Summit Trail Mix is better than your average GORP (good old raisins and peanuts) you probably had growing up. I plan to eat this trail mix for my summer goal: summiting a Colorado Fourteener!
I’m planning on hiking up Grays Peak with this trail mix in my pocket to keep me fueled with raw, unsalted goodness and crunchy sweet bites. While I love picking up bags of trail mix from Trader Joe’s or Costco, I find that buying mixes with salted nuts makes me extremely dehydrated and unable to stop crunching thanks to the salt. This trail mix with raw unsalted nuts is far more satisfying after a handful.
Adding puffins increases the serving size, since traditional trail mix is so calorically dense. Instead of handfuls of nuts and dried fruit, the crunchy cinnamon cereal mixes it up! I like to portion this out into half-cup baggies – each half-cup serving is 250 calories, 17 grams of healthy fats, and 6 grams of sustaining protein. A snack with a powerful nutritional punch, all wrapped up in a bite-sized package.
- 2 cups cinnamon Puffins cereal
- 1 cup raw unsalted almonds
- 1 cup raw unsalted cashews
- 1 cup raw unsalted walnuts
- 1 cup dried cranberries
- In a bowl, combine all ingredients and mix well.
- Portion into half-cup servings.
Store in bags or tupperware to keep fresh. I found these little portion bags at Target- they are perfect for snagging on the go!
Do you have a summer goal for yourself, whether it be a challenge with friends or yourself? Have you ever climbed a mountain!?

I love this. I have never made trail mix. Looks so easy and I think I have most of the ingredients!
Marisa says
It’s so easy – just mix together your favorite nuts, seeds, fruits, and you’re ready to go!

I love trail mix. I always buy pre-packed bags though, so I’ll definitely have to give mixing up my own a try. Thanks.
Marisa says
I am definitely swayed to buying some when they include chocolate 😉

Love puffins! It’s basically the only cereal I like!
Marisa says
Agreed! I love how crunchy it is, and the cinnamon flavor is my favorite.

I need to get those little serving bags! I always feel like the ones I use are too big, then cause me to either eat too much or psychologically think that my 1/3 cup serving isn’t enough. You’re the best!
Marisa says
I found them at Target – they are perfect for little snacks like bagging up dried fruit, since I will obliterate half the Costco bag in one sitting 🙂

What an awesome summer goal! I hiked Mt. Sneffels in Ouray a couple of summers ago, and it was an incredible (and, at points, incredibly hard) experience. I moved out of CO about 7 months ago, and I miss it all the time. Have fun and good luck – I’m sure your trail mix will help you along!
Marisa says
I’m glad to hear it was incredible AND hard- I am looking for a psychological and physical challenge that is rewarding!

Thanks for the follow, Rachel! 🙂

Beautiful! And probably much cheaper than pre-made trailmix! Have fun on your adventures this summer!

I love making easy items like trail mix from scratch – next up on my list is that beautiful white chocolate bark from your blog to give as presents 🙂 I hope you have some fun summer adventures planned too!

I love, love, LOVE that you added Puffins to this!! I bet the peanut butter ones would be delicious… or very dangerous 😉
Marisa says
Seriously though, peanut butter puffins are dangerous… I would just mine all the bags for them and that would defeat the point of trail mix!!
Hannah @ CleanEatingVeggieGirl says
Haha, you are so right! Maybe trail mix is just dangerous in general!! 😉
Erin @ The Almond Eater says
Love it!! You’re so right about the pre-made mixes. Some of them are ok but some are just pure salt I swear haha.
Marisa says
Yes, glad you agree about the saltiness! It just makes me shove trail mix in my mouth too fast and then need to down so much water.

This looks like great hiking fuel! I’m going to admit though, my favorite thing in this post is finally learning what GORP meant. 🙂 bahaha
Marisa says
As much as I love my GORP… I need more fun flavors! Glad I could enlighten you on another acronym!
Aimee says
I had never tried Puffins until I made this and was pleasantly surprised. This was such a simple snack to throw together and it really is delicious!
Marisa says
So glad to hear that, Aimee! Glad you enjoyed it!
