I spent some time abroad in Chile in 2011, enjoying Chilean slang (cachai?), studying indigenous culture and public health in the North, exploring the beautiful country from the Atacama Desert to Patagonia’s national parks, and eating hot dogs topped with avocado, tomato, and mayonnaise. It was truly the life.

So many of you know how big of a proponent I am of travel, but more than that, I seek to bring back home the lifestyle that travel teaches – be spontaneous, be bold, be outgoing. Say yes to day trips, yes to detours that lead you into interesting shops, and yes to the hot dog vendor on the corner, because your life is about to be changed. I am sharing this Chilean Style Hot Dog recipe with you today – while not really a recipe, the “Completo” Italiano is a delicious street food recipe that reminds me of my time in Chile.
- 2 chicken sausages
- ½ cup cherry tomatoes
- ½ Hass avocado
- 2 wheat hot dog buns
- 4 tablespoons 2% plain yogurt
- Squeeze of lemon juice
- Optional garnishes: sauerkraut, ketchup, mustard
- Grill sausages per package instructions.
- Dice cherry tomatoes and avocado together.
- Warm hot dog buns and place the sausages into the bun. Top with tomato and avocado mixture.
- Mix plain yogurt with lemon juice (or use mayonnaise), and drizzle the mixture overtop of the hot dogs. I used a plastic bag with the tip cut to imitate a squeeze bottle look.
- Serve with ketchup, mustard, sauerkraut, etc.
For those of you who have had a “Completo” before, you may notice some of my healthy alternatives – I used chicken sausage, plain yogurt flavored with lemon instead of mayo, and skipped on overloading the bun. The true flavor of the “Completo” is still there, and I urge you to give it a try whether you’ve been lucky enough to have Chilean street food or not!
Chi-chi-chi-le-le-le! Viva Chile! If only they’d made it further through the World Cup, I would be celebrating with these Completos again.

Those look like such summery hot dogs! Might try a veggie version. Hope you had a great time in Chile- I’ve never been to South America and would love to go!
Marisa says
Yes, veggie dogs would be awesome here! You could even ditch the bun for a lettuce wrap as a non-traditional version.

I went to Chile on my honeymoon and even though I hate hot dogs, I had to try a completo! Loved it! Did you try a lomito completo? That thing was so massive – my husband and I split one and we were still stuffed! So cool that you got to study abroad there!
Marisa says
I did not try a lomito completo, but I just looked it up and that is crazy!! How wonderful to hear that Chile was your honeymoon spot – so full of culture, color, and avocados 🙂

Ok so I’m not a huuuuuge hot dog fan, but if I were to eat one, I’d definitely like mine this way!! I mean, anything with avocado please 🙂
Marisa says
I’m not a fan of most hot dogs – that’s why I love the variation with chicken sausage. I definitely added more avocado as I ate my way through this guy!
Maria @ The Good Life says
Oh momma is loving this. I am a huge hot dog person but they put so much junk in them. I love this healthified version!
Marisa says
Thanks Maria!

Yummo!! I need to make these with vegan “hot dogs!!”
Marisa says
I think your vegan carrot hot dogs would be awesome with this flavor combo!

I had no idea Chilean street food involved hot dogs… this looks amazing! Chile is pretty high up on my want-to-visit list!
Marisa says
I know, I didn’t expect it either! I hope this recipe bumps it up further on your ‘to-do’ list 😀
Lauren says
Yummy, these look good! I am obsessed with chicken sausage, especially if I’m feeling lazy. Annnnd I should also say that Costco hot dogs are kind of the best thing ever….even if hot dogs aren’t the healthiest 😉
Marisa says
Thanks Lauren! Agreed- chicken sausage (especially the pre-cooked Trader Joe’s ones!) are such an easy meal! I am too much of a fan of Costco soft serve, so I haven’t tried their hot dogs.

Marisa says
Thanks Thalia!

Ah this makes me so happy!!!!! I expect a sopaipilla recipe in the winter
Marisa says
Hi Blake!! Sopaipillas sound so good right now 😀 I’ll work on making those healthier (wait, no, I’ll just make them).
