This Breakfast Muesli is chock full of sustaining foods like quinoa flakes, a variety of nuts, and seeds, but is recognizable with its oats and token dried fruit to sweeten it naturally.
I am taking a break from moving boxes and picking out paint swatches to bring you the breakfast that has been my dry snack of choice over the past hectic week.
Disclaimer: This post is sponsored by Diamond of California nuts to bring you gifts-in-jars ideas for the holidays. I was compensated for my time.
Muesli is a Swiss breakfast food that can be eaten dry and served with your choice of milk, or soaked at least 2 before eating in milk or yogurt (with the option of adding additional fresh fruit as topping). What better way to promote healthy choices during the holiday season than to gift a jar of healthy breakfast food that is easy to prepare and easy to customize?
- 3 cups rolled oats
- 2 cups quinoa flakes
- ¼ cup oat bran
- ¼ cup ground flaxseed
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 cup sliced almonds
- 1 cup chopped pecans
- 1 cup chopped hazelnuts
- 1 cup golden raisins
- 1 cup dried coconut flakes
- ½ cup dried cranberries
- ½ cup unsalted sunflower seeds
- ¼ cup hemp hearts
- In a bowl, combine rolled oats, quinoa flakes, oat bran, ground flax, cinnamon, and salt.
- In another bowl, combine sliced almonds, chopped pecans, and chopped hazelnuts.
- In a third bowl, combine raisins, coconut, and cranberries.
- In a final bowl, combine sunflower seeds and hemp hearts.
- Layer the ingredients into your jars, starting with the rolled oat mixture and ending with seeds. Portion into jars or bags.
- In a bowl, combine all ingredients and portion into jars or bags.
- See details below with options for serving, noting that ¾ cup of muesli is one serving.
Use any size jars that you please to put together these Edible DIY Muesli jars. I added about 3 cups of dry mix to my jars so each one contained 4 servings – perfect for a family to enjoy on a holiday morning. Allow some headspace in each jar so they can be shaken before serving to mix up the ingredients if you are layering the ingredients.
Tie up your sealed jars with twine or ribbon, or use labels to creatively name your homemade batch of muesli.
I recommend adding a note with serving suggestions (3/4 cup of the dry mix when the jar is shaken up) and ideas for how to enjoy the muesli:
- Enjoy cold now: Enjoy 3/4 of a cup of dry cereal with vanilla almond milk and sliced banana and additional chopped pecans
- Prep for tomorrow’s on the go breakfast: Soak 3/4 of a cup of dry cereal with 1 cup milk for 2 hours (and up to overnight) and enjoy in the morning with fresh blueberries and additional sliced almonds
- Creamy overnight oats: Soak 3/4 of a cup of dry cereal with 3/4 cup milk and 1/4 cup yogurt for 2 hours (and up to overnight)
- Cooked until piping hot: While not the traditional way to eat muesli, you can also heat 3/4 of a cup of dry cereal on the stove with 1 cup water and 1/4 cup milk for 5-8 minutes until creamy
I hope this helps get your creative juices flowing about how to make healthy and delicious treats for family and friends this holiday season. Some of my previous Edible DIY Gifts include: hot cocoa mix in jars, swirled chocolate bark, and candied almonds.

What a great holiday gift! I like the muesli better than all of those dessert ingredients in a jar, more nutritious and breakfast is the best!!
Marisa says
Yes, definitely more nutritious! I love breakfast 😀

These are so cute! I love the idea of an edible gift that’s actually healthy plus it sounds delicious!
And I’m ashamed to admit that I’ve never tried muesli. It’s very popular in Switzerland but I seemed to have overlooked it at the buffets and now I’m regretting it because it sounds like something I would love.

Thanks Sarah! I loved seeing your photos from your trip. Maybe making this will encourage you to replicate more recipes for us from your travels 🙂
