This Persimmon Smoothie is a simple combination of persimmon, banana, almond-cashew milk, cinnamon and clove spices.
Have you tried a persimmon yet? It’s a high sugar fruit with two varieties (see below) in season from October through December – one of the few seasonal options in winter! They grow in California, Florida, and certain areas in the South.
As you might know, I bought 40 pounds of Fuyu persimmons the other week as part of a fundraiser for a food justice organization in Oakland, Ca., close by to Berkeley.
Excessive? Perhaps! But they’re one of my favorite new fruits. Think about the texture of an Asian pear, or an apple, combined with the sweet flavor of an orange – with a hint of cinnamon. Strange to imagine, but perfect to bite into.
One important note for buying persimmons, so you enjoy the experience!
- Fuyu persimmons are the ones you want for this recipe. They are like flatter tomatoes (pictured), and are firm or slightly soft when eaten – just remove the stem and leaves. You can slice them like an apple for snacking.
- Hachiya persimmons cannot be treated the same way… they have to be extremely ripe and soft to be sweet enough to be enjoyed. They are shaped like bell peppers.
While persimmons are delicious plain, I want to share their goodness with you guys in the form of a dreamy winter fruit smoothie.
When combined with frozen banana and warming spices, the sweetness of the persimmon and its flavor really pop. I also used Blue Diamond’s new unsweetened Almondmilk Cashewmilk, which contributed lots of creamy texture to this smoothie.
So tell me: Have I convinced you to try a persimmon? In California, they are found everywhere at this time of year for around $1-2/lb, but I know they are closer to $2-3/lb elsewhere. It’s worth it to try them at least once! Heck, if you can’t find them, let me know and I’ll share my loot! 😉
- 1 Fuyu persimmon, chopped
- 1 frozen banana
- ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/16 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1 cup unsweetened Almond Breeze Almondmilk Cashewmilk
- 2 ice cubes
- In a high powdered blender, combine all ingredients and blend until smooth. Add additional ice cubes or water to thin the smoothie if desired.
Let me know if you find them in your grocery store and if you get the chance to try the smoothie! I also love my Pumpkin Chai smoothie this time of year.

Yum! This sounds so amazing, persimmons are my favorite fruit this time of year. I was trying to explain their flavor to a friend the other day and it was difficult to describe but you said it perfectly! 🙂

They are so hard to describe to someone who’s never enjoyed them, but so good I want to spread the love 🙂

Yup! Totally convinced me. When you described the taste/texture I was like “yup, yup, gotta have it”

Can I take some of those persimmons off of your hands for you? They are some of my favorite fruits and I can’t find them anywhere here in the dreary midwest!
Sarah says
How would it taste using whole milk? I have a tree full haychia of persimmons.
Marisa says
Hi Sarah – You can absolutely use whole milk. I’m jealous of your persimmon tree! Enjoy!
